On Feb. 19, RCMP officers were called to Toronto’s Pearson Airport after Canada Border Services Agency staff discovered approximately 33 kilograms of cannabis in checked bags of two German citizens.
The two passengers didn’t actually check in any luggage for their flight home. They were travelling separately and didn’t know each other.
RCMP officers arrested both. They co-operated with police and were released without charges.
An investigation discovered an Air Canada employee working in the baggage room had placed tags with the passengers’ names onto two identical suitcases that had been filled with cannabis.
On March 12, police arrested and charged Atasha Weathley, a 32-year-old from Mississauga.
Weathley was released with conditions and is slated to appear in court again on April 10.
Border services officers also seized 37.5 kg of cannabis recently at the Montreal-Trudeau airport.
The luggage was headed to France and discovered by a detector dog. A Portuguese citizen was arrested. See a video here.
