Aurora Cannabis expands in UK

Aurora Cannabis is continuing its own acquisition spree even while it’s the target of an increasingly aggressive takeover attempt.

Aurora announced on Wednesday it has acquired UK companies Internode Pharma Limited, a medical cannabis importer and wholesaler, and HAP Pharma Limited, a virtual pharmacy based in Birmingham.

Aurora, through a wholly owned subsidiary, paid the selling shareholders 2.1 million pounds in cash.

Edmonton-based Aurora, which specializes in medical cannabis in Canada and internationally, sees the UK as one of the more promising European markets and says it will look for more opportunities there.

“We believe that this transaction will allow us to fully leverage our operational, commercial and regulatory expertise to expand our market share, while also supporting a consistent and reliable supply of high-quality medical cannabis products to UK patients,” said CEO Miguel Martin in a news release.

Meanwhile, US company Curaleaf is ramping up its campaign to convince Aurora shareholders to sell — after Aurora again issued a less-than-enthusiastic response to Curaleaf’s overtures.

“Don’t be fooled by Aurora’s response as it does not change the facts: billions written off, years of restructuring, bloated costs, and promises made with little to show for it. Curaleaf appreciates that the value of the EU-GMP assets is real, which is why we have offered a significant premium. However, the stewardship under Aurora’s leadership has not done them justice,” the American company wrote on X.

Curaleaf has also launched a takeover campaign website.
