BC’s new vaping crackdown doesn’t target cannabis
Published on October 17, 2025 by Pat Bulmer
A new BC law taking aim at vaping manufacturers will not apply to cannabis vaping products and accessories.
The provincial government introduced the Vaping Product Damages and Health Care Costs Recovery Act on Oct. 8. The legislation targets tobacco and nicotine products.
“If passed, the Vaping Product Damages and Health Care Costs Recovery Act would not apply to cannabis vaping products and accessories,” the ministry said in an email to the oz. “The legislation is intended to build on the province’s work to address the complex challenges associated with tobacco, vaping and nicotine use.”
The law will enable the province to take legal action against companies that cause public harm through misleading promotion of vaping products, a government news release said.
“Deceptive practices by vaping manufacturers are driving harmful behaviours, especially among youth, and placing growing pressure on our health-care and education systems,” said Attorney General Niki Sharma. “On our watch, British Columbians will not be left paying the price for corporate deception.”
The act will allow the province to recover public health costs and “ensure accountability from wrongdoers whose products are associated with vaping-related disease and injury,” the release said.
On Aug. 29, BC received the first payment of nearly $1 billion from the total $3.6 billion it will receive through the landmark settlement of a lawsuit against tobacco companies.
