Cannabis news in brief: TobaGrown buys HWY 59 and Banter; Glacial Gold broadens beyond THC; Village Farms launches Super Toast Bites; Sourz by Spinach adds gummy multipacks; Tilray introduces Zonna pouches; Med X becomes Dazed; Avicanna unveils rapid-onset capsules; BC raids $8 million in illicit cannabis; High Tide opens sixth Ottawa Canna Cabana

Manitoba’s TobaGrown Inc. has acquired two top provincial companies in the extract business.

Jesse Lavoie’s TobaGrown has acquired HWY 59 and Banter, the company announced in a news release.

“As part of the transaction, TobaGrown will also acquire extraction equipment and retain key members of the original HWY 59 team, ensuring the expertise and craftsmanship behind the brands continues,” the release said.

“The acquisition represents a significant milestone in TobaGrown’s expansion into the Cannabis 2.0 category (non-smokable products like edibles and vapes), adding locally developed extract brands to the company’s growing portfolio of flower and pre-roll cannabis products. TobaGrown also plans to provide extraction services to other licensed producers across Manitoba,” the release said.

Glacial Gold branches out

Nextleaf Solution’s flagship Glacial Gold brand is diversifying beyond THC.

“Health Canada’s 2024 Canadian Cannabis Survey reported: THC-predominant use has remained essentially unchanged since 2019, at 35% (while) CBD-predominant use increased from 13% to 19% over the same period,” the B.C. cannabis and cannabinoid producer said in a news release.

“Nextleaf reads these results as evidence that consumer preferences continue to diversify beyond THC alone, with growing interest in CBD-focused products and more balanced cannabinoid profiles.

“At the same time, wellness consumers are incorporating cannabinoid products into everyday routines built around therapeutic need-states such as better sleep, pain management, recovery from injury and athletics, and balanced mood,” the release said.

So in the future, the company will focus more on “non-combustible formats, including high-potency oils, softgels, and vape products.”

Glacial Gold’s flagship softgels are particularly successful, the company says. Its CBD vapes are doing well too.

“Consumers are … looking beyond potency alone toward brands they can trust,” the company said.

New products, packaging, promotions and website will be rolling out this summer, the company said.

New edible from Village Farms

Village Farms has a new cannabis gummy.

Super Toast Bites come in two formats: Diamond Bites and Rosin Bites.

Diamond Bites are toast-shaped, sugar-coated gummies infused with liquid diamonds. Launching in Sgt. Pineapple and Strawnana flavours, each pack features 10 individually wrapped 10-mg THC gummies.

Rosin Bites are jumbo, sprinkle-coated gumdrops featuring solventless live hash rosin. They debut in a Blue Razz flavour. Also sold in packages of 10 individually wrapped 10-mg THC gummies.

Super Toast Bites are available in Ontario, and additional markets in coming weeks.

New gummy multipacks

Sourz by Spinach is expanding its lineup of Fully Blasted gummy multipacks.

The liquid diamond-infused gummies now include the brand’s popular flavours in cannabinoid formulations, plus a new flavour for summer.

The new multipacks contain 10 gummies each. Fully Blasted Orange Cream is the limited-time summer offering. More permanent additions are Strawberry Watermelon (10 mg CBG-10 mg THC); Peach Passionfruit (10 mg CBN-10 mg THC); and Mango Lime (10mg CBC-10 mg THC).

The new edibles from Cronos Group are available in Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and Saskatchewan.

Cannabis pouch name sounds familiar

Tilray’s new cannabis pouch (put it in your mouth, let it sit there and do its thing) sounds an awful lot like a nicotine pouch that has been advertised prominently lately.

Tilray’s Zonna-brand Bubble Pink pouches contain 10 milligrams of THC with 15 pouches in each container. They have Tilray’s “fast-acting” Capsoil technology that delivers precise dosing, the company says.

Zonnic is a nicotine pouch from Imperial Tobacco being advertised as a stop-smoking aid. In its ads, the man who uses it says his wife admires him because he stopped smoking.

New name fits the business

Now that’s a fitting cannabis company name.

Med X Holdings of Austin, Texas, has changed its name to Dazed Inc. and will trade on the stock market under the ticker symbol DAZD.

“After years of operating under the Med X name, the transition to Dazed Inc. reflects the company’s evolution and strategic direction,” a news release proclaimed.

Dazed’s main retail brand and its stores in Houston and San Marcos, Texas, will be dubbed “Lazydaze.”

This fall it will introduce Lazydaze K-Cups, bagged whole bean coffee, Mushroom Mix, premium rolling papers, and “Lazydaze Seshware.”

New capsules from Avicanna

A new line of rapid-onset medical cannabis capsules and soft chews is to be released by Canada’s Avicanna Inc.

“Avicanna Inc. … today announced the introduction of its proprietary QUIX-powered rapid-onset medical cannabis portfolio,” the company announced in a July 16 news release. “The new portfolio reflects the company’s continued focus on supporting the evolution of medical cannabis through standardized, accurately dosed, and non-combustible product formats.”

Products will be coming out later this year on medical cannabis platforms, including Avicanna’s own MyMedi.ca.

About QUIX, Avicanna says: “The liquid technology produces nano-sized cannabinoid droplets designed to provide rapid onset, enhanced cannabinoid absorption and consistent product performance.

Cannabis warehouses raided

Illegal cannabis, estimated to be worth about $8 million, was seized from four warehouses in BC.

Investigators from the province’s community safety unit carried out the raids against unlicensed cannabis retailers and producers under the authority of the Cannabis Control and Licensing Act, a provincial news release explained.

“At the four warehouses in Richmond, Vancouver and Vernon, the CSU investigators seized a significant amount of cannabis, including cannabis plants, dried cannabis and cannabis edibles. The initial estimate of the seized cannabis is nearly $8 million. That amount could change after further processing of the items seized,” the release said.

RCMP and Vancouver police were also involved in the raids.

The CSU is responsible for ensuring compliance with the cannabis licensing act.

Ottawa gets sixth Canna Cabana

High Tide has opened its sixth Canna Cabana store in the Ottawa region.

The new Canna Cabana is located in Findlay’s Creek, a growing suburb in south Ottawa within the broader Gloucester area.

The opening brings High Tide’s store count to 229 Canna Cabana locations across Canada and 104 in Ontario.

Two Ottawa stores — ByWard Market and Rideau Street — recently unionized.
