Photo: Contributed Expansion into the Netherlands and consolidation of its Canadian product line helped Village Farms International have one of its best financial quarters ever, the company said.
“Second quarter performance reflected record levels of profitability since we expanded into cannabis in 2017, and eclipsed several records set during our nearly 20-year history as a publicly traded company,” President and CEO Michael DeGiglio said in a statement.
The company owns Pure Sunfarms.
In the recently concluded quarter, Village Farms sold a produce division, expanded into the Netherlands’ adult-use market and realigned Canadian sales to focus on its better-selling products, the company said. More recently, the company announced expansion plans for its Delta, BC, greenhouses.
Net sales in Canada increased 9% to $61.4 million from $55.8 million. International medical export sales increased 690%, the company said.
In the United States, Balanced Health Botanicals sales were down, but they’re small anyway.
Sales were also small, but new, in the Netherlands.
The company has maintained a top three overall market share position in Canada and the No. 1 position in dried flower through the month of July, the report said.
After the quarter ended, the company launched new windowed packaging for its flower products in Canada.
Overall, most financial categories improved, compared to the same quarter a year ago, the company said.
During the second quarter, the company’s stock climbed over $1, which is enough to get its Nasdaq stock market listing back.
The company’s board of directors also approved converting the remaining 550,000 square feet of its Delta 2 greenhouse to cannabis production.
Forty tonnes of annual production capacity is expected to come online in phases, with the first plantings in the new grow rooms set for spring, the company said.
The conversion process will require approximately $10 million in capital expenditures. The project will be funded with existing cash on hand.
Completion of the Delta 2 greenhouse conversion will increase production square footage by approximately 33 per cent, the company said.
