Penticton sets its pot policy

Tuesday was a milestone day for cannabis storefronts in Penticton.

City council has voted to support a report outlining the proposed framework for introducing retail cannabis sales in the city.

For the next step, council directed staff to introduce policies and bylaws in-line with the report at the Dec. 4 meeting, city communication manager Philip Cooper told the oz.

The framework needs to be in place before the city can consider the applications for storefronts referred by the province, said city planning manager Blake Laven.

Approval means city staff will be in a position to initiate the process for amendments to the zoning bylaw, as well as changes to other bylaws and policies.

By mid-November, Penticton had received four referrals for private retail stores and one government owned store.

However, the arrival of storefront locations is still several months away.
