Kelowna’s 2nd cannabis store opens

Published on December 21, 2019 by oz. staff

Cheeba Cheebas opens Saturday in Kelowna, becoming the second retail cannabis store to open in the city.

It’s owned by Chris and Jackie Gayford, who operate Mary Jane’s Headquarters.

They’re open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 140 Rutland Rd.

They have a unique position in the local market, having operated Mary Jane’s HQ two doors down. It’s the biggest head shop in Western Canada.

Mary’s Jane’s Headquarters has been open in the Okanagan since 2001 (but of course couldn’t sell cannabis). Gayford was in radio advertising before taking over ownership about six years ago. He’s brightened up the inside, adding wood flooring and an open-concept layout.

There are now 25 licensed private cannabis stores in the Okanagan, as well as four government stores. (Though not all have opened yet.) Cheeba Cheebas also has a licence in West Kelowna and expects to be open soon there.

Province-wide, nearly 200 stores are now licensed.
